About our class

Welcome to our Lower Key Stage 2 class page. At St Mary’s Primary School, we have a mixed Year 3 and 4 class. We aim to create a warm, happy and inspiring environment where each child will be challenged and acquire knowledge and skills. Our curriculum is carefully planned as a whole school to ensure continuity and progression for all. As much as possible, we seek to enhance our curriculum through inviting visitors to school and undertaking educational visits.

Children are taught as a class, in small groups and individually, as appropriate. A high priority is given to support children to become independent learners in Key Stage 2. We like to challenge ourselves and try to give everything a go. We take care and pride in the work we complete. We are resilient and understand that making mistakes is okay!

In our class we are a team and have lots of fun learning, asking questions and solving problems. We feel it is very important that the children feel happy and safe in the classroom. We discuss how we can all work together to understand what makes a 'good listener' and how we can look after ourselves, our classroom and each other. We are encouraged to work independently, to apply our learning, but know how to use resources around the classroom to help us, as well as ask each other and our teachers for help, if needed.

In Lower Key Stage 2, it is important that we read as much as possible as well as consolidate our times table knowledge. We all have TTRockstars logins and are able to choose reading books to take home.

Term 1

This term we have enjoyed reading and writing about our class texts 'Ten Word Tiny Tales', 'The Secret of Black Rock' and 'I Talk Like A River'. We have enjoyed writing our own ten word tiny tales, descriptive writing, diary entries and haikus. We have enjoyed finding and using ambitious, exciting vocabulary in our writing as well as using grammatical features such as prepositions and adverbials.

In Maths, we have learnt about place value as well as starting our addition and subtraction unit. We have looked at representing and partitioning numbers up to 10,000, comparing and ordering numbers as well as rounding. We have also enjoyed learning our times tables and we have practised our 2s, 5s, 10s, 3s, and 4s so far. The Year 4's have worked incredibly hard already with learning their times tables in preparation for their Multiplication Tables Check in Term 6. I am so proud of all of your hard work!

Linked to our learning in History about Prehistoric Britain, we were excited to investigate a Stone Age to Iron Age Enquiry box from Weston Museum. We enjoyed getting a closer look at artefacts from Prehistoric Britain and using their inference skills to work out their uses.

In PE, we have enjoyed playing Netball. We have learnt about the rules of netball and practised our passes. By the end of the term, we were able to play our own 4v4 games independently.

Term 2

Wow, what an exciting term!

In Maths this term, we have enjoyed learning about our times table and consolidating these facts up to 12x12! We have also started learning about area including how we can calculate area and creating shapes with specific areas.

In our Writing lessons, we have enjoyed reading ‘Once upon a raindrop’ as well as ‘Nen and the lonely Fisherman’. It has been fantastic to see the children making links between these two books as well as using fantastic vocabulary to describe the water present in both texts. This term we have written a haiku, a narrative poem, a character description and an innovated narrative including high quality vocabulary, fronted adverbials and complex sentences.

At the end of this term, we enjoyed a trip to Cheddar caves. At the start of the day, we enjoyed exploring Cox’s cave before we headed to the prehistory museum. Then we watched some fantastic prehistory demonstrations to learn more about what life would have been like. In the afternoon, we had a tour of Goughs cave including seeing a replica of Cheddar Man’s bones and trying to spot a family of bats.

The children represented the school fantastically!

Term 3

It was great to see everyone back and refreshed after Christmas!

The children enjoyed learning about the Bronze and Iron Ages in our History lessons this term. Our enquiry question was ‘How did life change in Britain during the Bronze and Iron Age?’ and the children looked at different aspects of life during these times to help them answer this, such as differences in settlements, metalworking and trade. They have had the opportunity to create a double-page spread in their books at the end of the unit to showcase their knowledge and answer this question!

In our Writing lessons, we have been reading ‘The Ever-Changing Earth’ and ‘The Wilderness’. The children have risen to the challenge presented by ‘The Ever-Changing Earth’ of being able to describe how scientists believe the Earth has changed over time. I have been really impressed with their confidence with ordering and describing these events! They have used this learning to write information texts using adverbial phrases and noun phrases. We have also read ‘The Wilderness’ to write adventure narratives.

In Maths, we have looked at applying our times table facts for short multiplication. We have also looked at length and perimeter including converting between centimetres, millimetres, kilometres and metres and calculating the perimeter of rectilinear shapes and polygons.
