Mathematics
At St Mary's, we firmly believe that every child can be successful in maths. Our mastery curriculum aims to inspire, support and challenge all pupils to become confident and inquisitive mathematicians.
The aims of our Maths curriculum are for pupils to:
- Become fluent in the fundamentals of number and the number system, including through varied and frequent practice
- Develop a conceptual understanding, to recall and apply known facts
- Reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, spotting patterns and using mathematical language
- Solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of contexts, using trial and improvement to investigate and explore
Our teaching follows the White Rose Maths sequence of learning and is supplemented by additional materials such as those from NCETM and Nrich. We use a variety of manipulatives and pictorial representations within lessons to encourage flexibility and which act as a ‘toolkit’ for pupils to support their learning. We are always thinking about how we can provide further maths enrichment opportunities throughout the school year.
